MacOSX Address Book Fail

There’s two problems with the address book. First, you can’t set a default email account for entries. It sort of uses the first email for each entry, but you can override it for distribution lists. The default address should be explicitly noted. Furthermore, it should be an easier way to set the default address instead of cutting and pasting the new address over the old address. That’s just dumb.

The second problem is that you can’t tag IM accounts correctly. Users are stuck with AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, and Jabber. Want to enter GTalk? Well, you’re going to have to know that GTalk is Jabber, and ideally enter the full GTalk path so that any Jabber client can connect to it. Want to add a Skype contact? Sorry. You’re SOL. That’s just dumb, especially when you consider that you can add your own labels to the front of the IM, like “home,” “work,” “summer home” or whatever. I don’t know Apple didn’t just add that level of customization to the provider labels.

Seems like there should be a plugin or something that fixes this, but I sure can’t find it.

Linux Can Blow Me

I’m tired of linux. Sure I still like unix. I’m comfortable in unix. Unix lets me do my work.

Linux on the other hand, is still just a buggy and worthless as ever.

I’m trying to get ESD to recognize my soundcard. ESD says I don’t have one. Actually it says, ALSA says I don’t have one. Funny, OSS can use ALSA just fine.

That’s when I realized that at no point in the 7 years I’ve used linux, I’ve never had all my hardware work at the same time. And not just work, but work Right™.

I’m tired of it. I am not a fucking sysadmin. I do not enjoy fucking sysadmining. Trying to find out out why I have to manually load a module to get USB to work is not my idea of fun. I don’t get my rocks off by screwing around with XF86Configs for a week only to get an image that almost fills the screen, and is almost straight across, and just has a little bit of white and black vertical lines in along the top and left edges. When I shove in my USB mouse, I want it to not only be recognized and made usable, but I want all 7 buttons to work damn it.

I am seriously considering getting a mac as my next machine. I just wish I could use my own window manager under it. I found out that someone got windowmaker to work under MacOSX using xfree4. Fuck, I don’t want to use XFree, I’d rather use whatever the hell macos uses, because then I know the hardware will be fully supported and properly configured. Then I found a link to the gnu-darwin project

GNU-Darwin aims to be the most free Darwin-based Unix distribution. Our mission is two-fold: Focus on new projects that leverage the unique capabilities of Darwin/Mach and help Apple users to enjoy the benefits of free software.

What’s that? Selfrightous software that doesn’t quite work, but it doesn’t matter because you’ve got the source that you’ll never look at? If that’s what’s most important to you, then you need to get the fuck out of the ACM office.
